200 Cigarettes

200 Cigarettes is a comedy set in 1981 Manhattan, in which a cast of revolving characters fumble their way to various New Year's Eve parties. As I watched this, I thought to myself that this cast probably volunteered to be in the film just so they could work through the psychological issues that consumed them before they became famous.

But that's not a bad thing, considering many of these actors went back home and the others went to places they'd never been. If you're into retro New Wave styles and pre-AIDS dating scenes you'll be awash in nostalgia.

If, like me, you hated the eighties and the entire Reagan Error, (sorry 'era') and was a southern California ska boy, you'll be intrigued by what they must have lived like on the neurotic east coast. And if you're from the east coast, you'll find 200 Cigarettes a real kick-ass movie telling a funny story that all takes place in one evening.

The humor is sharp, almost a stand-up comic's convention on the big-screen thing, worked into various subplots about how misfit characters intertwine as they experience mis-adventures trying to find their way to a New Year's eve party. If you liked "Go", you'll like this one.

If you think you are going to get a flick like "The Last Days of Disco" here, the slow-motion pace of a few scenes will put you to sleep before it's half over, but as you close your eyes, just groove to the film's great soundtrack and wake up for to enjoy several memorable cameos.

"1982 is gonna be like the best year ever." Indeed.
