Jim Carrey puts in a Mask-esque performance as the Grinch in this full-length film version of the Dr. Suess classic.

How the Grinch Stole ChristmasYou wanted Tim Burton to get the nod, but Ron Howard got it, and turned what might have been a disturbing, smart meditation on mean-spiritedness and giving into a overly busy and mainstream "crowd pleaser."

Making the 30 minute original cartoon into a 90 minute film results in a lot of filler, and Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas (the Deluxe Edition has nice add-ons) sometimes drags. The suburban denizens of Whoville are not as likeable as in the orginal classic, which heavily detracts from the intended message. It will keep the kiddies in the seats; but if you want to make it a truly special night, rent the 1965 cartoon.

Thinky rating: Gingerbread Nintendo.
