Brought to you by the guy who made Shakespeare in Love (John Madden).

Captain Corelli's MandolinNicholas Cage and Penelope Cruz are good in this multi-national effort about love on a Greek island during World War II. But not good enough.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin tries to recreate the mood and complexity of the novel it's based on, but can't, and the result is too thin to stick.

What we have here is a classic example of a film suspended between a Hollywood factory sausage and a watery art film. If scenery is enough to keep you happy, and you don't mind characters falling in and out of accent, then maybe you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thinky says: I was on a Greek island once. I rented a moped.
