"A great civilisation is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within." - Will Durant, 20th century historian/philosopher.

ApocalyptoThese are the opening words of Apocalypto (check out the Widescreen Edition), written and directed by Academy-Award-winning filmmaker Mel Gibson (Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ), the film is an action/adventure set against the turbulent end times of the Mayan civilisation.

When Jaguar Paw's idyllic existence is brutally disrupted by a violent invading force, he is taken on a perilous journey to a metropolis ruled by fear and oppression where a harrowing end awaits him.

Driven by his love for his woman and his family he will make a desperate break to return home and to ultimately save his way of life. The visual effects and pure harsh reality of Mayan urban life is really breath-taking, you can feel the awe and fear of the Jaguar Paw as he struggles to survive his ordeal.
